Layl — night — is one of the Quran's most evocative time words. It appears approximately 92 times in the Quran and is the subject of divine oaths: 'By the night as it conceals' (92:1), 'By the night when it departs' (89:4), 'By the night when it covers' (81:17). Night in the Quran is not merely the absence of daylight — it is the privileged time of divine proximity, of intimate worship, of the prophetic descent of revelation.

The most significant Quranic event connected to night is Laylat al-Qadr — the Night of Power or Decree — described in Surah Al-Qadr as better than a thousand months, as the night when the angels and the Ruh descend by permission of their Lord with every divine decree for the coming year. The Quran was sent down on this night (2:185, 97:1); it is in the last ten nights of Ramadan; and its prayer and worship are worth more than the worship of a human lifetime.

The Quran's instruction for nighttime worship is among the most demanding: 'O you who wraps himself [in clothing] — arise and give warning... Indeed, the night is the most suited for being upright and most conducive for speech' (73:1-6). The famous tahajjud — the voluntary night prayer — is described as an extra station of honor for the Prophet (17:79). Night in the Quran is the time when the world quiets and the heart can speak directly to its Lord without the noise and distraction of daylight life.

Layl (night) appears approximately 92 times in the Quran. Night is the subject of divine oaths in Al-Layl (92:1), Al-Fajr (89:4), and Al-Takwir (81:17). Laylat al-Qadr is the subject of the entire Surah Al-Qadr (97). Night worship (tahajjud) is commanded in Al-Muzzammil (73) and described as an extra station of honor for the Prophet in Al-Isra (17:79).

Key ayahs

Al-Qadr 97:1-4

Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Power. And what can make you know what is the Night of Power? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.

The supreme night in the entire Quran. The superlative ('better than a thousand months') makes mathematical what theology says: one night of worship on Laylat al-Qadr is worth more than 83 years of worship on other nights. The descent of the angels and the Ruh (Jibril) with every divine decree makes this night the annual moment of divine governance most vivid to human consciousness. Seeking this night in the last ten of Ramadan is among the most intensely practiced Sunnahs.

Al-Muzzammil 73:1-4

O you who wraps himself — arise during the night except for a little — half of it, or subtract from it a little, or add to it.

The first command to the Prophet for nighttime prayer. The address — 'O you who wraps himself' (al-muzzammil) — is intimate, catching the Prophet in his private moment. The command: arise during the night. The flexibility — half, or less, or more — shows the divine accommodation of different capacities while insisting on the practice. Night prayer is not a peripheral optional — it is the first specific obligation given to the Prophet after the first revelation.

Al-Isra 17:79

وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَّكَ عَسَىٰ أَن يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا

And from the night — pray with it as an extra for you; perhaps your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.

The tahajjud — the voluntary night prayer — is described as a nāfilah (extra, voluntary) for the Prophet — distinct from the obligatory prayers — that will raise him to 'Al-Maqam al-Mahmud' (the Praised Station) on the Day of Judgment. Classical scholars identify this as the station of the great intercession. Night prayer and the highest prophetic station are directly connected in this verse.
