Tafsir is the science and practice of explaining the Quran — uncovering its meanings, its historical context, its linguistic depths, and its legal and spiritual implications. The word means 'explanation' or 'unveiling': to make the hidden surface. Classical tafsir drew from Arabic language, hadith, companion reports, pre-Islamic poetry, and Jewish and Christian traditions. Modern tafsir adds historical-critical and thematic methods. But at its core, tafsir is the community's ongoing conversation with its scripture — begun by the Prophet ﷺ himself, who was the Quran's first and most authoritative interpreter.

The word tafsīr appears only once in the Quran itself (25:33): 'and We have brought you the truth and the best tafsīr' — referring to the Quran as its own best explanation of itself. This single use has generated an entire discipline.

Key ayahs

25:33

وَلَا يَأْتُونَكَ بِمَثَلٍ إِلَّا جِئْنَٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَأَحْسَنَ تَفْسِيرًا

And they do not come to you with an argument except that We bring you the truth and the best tafsir.

The only verse in the Quran containing the word tafsīr — and it is Allah speaking of His own Quran as the best explanation of itself. This establishes the first and highest principle of tafsir: al-Quran yufassiru baʿḍuhu baʿḍan — 'the Quran explains parts of itself through other parts.' When a verse is ambiguous, the first place to look is the Quran itself.

75:19

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُۥ

Then upon Us is its clarification.

Allah takes responsibility for the Quran's clarification (bayān) — which the scholars interpret as happening through the Prophet ﷺ's sunnah and through the illumination He grants to scholars of each age. This verse grounds tafsir in divine aid: the Quran is not a closed text left to human interpretation alone, but an ongoing conversation in which Allah's guidance continues.

38:29

A blessed Book We have revealed to you, that they might reflect on its verses — and that those of understanding might be reminded.

This verse names tadabbur (deep reflection) as the Quran's own stated goal for how it wants to be engaged. Tafsir is the structured discipline that enables tadabbur. Without tafsir, tadabbur can become unguided — the untrained reader imposing their own meanings. With tafsir as a foundation, tadabbur becomes deeper and more reliable.
